What is an appropriate tip for the maid at a hotel/motel? If you stay more than one night would you wait until your stay ended and give one tip?

It is best to do your tipping daily, since you might have different people cleaning your room. I would have answered differently, but this makes very good sense.

I've always left $5 after staying even a day. $1 seems pretty cheap to me considering they have to scrub the shower and sink and make the beds.

I tend to agree. I have always been stupid I guess and left my tip at the end of my stay.
If I have to ask for the trash to go out, or for towels, then I don't think the staff is seeing to my needs very well and did not think a generous tip was appropos.
But now, I see that if I leave a tip for a specific person, and don't do it when I see that person, the wrong person may get the tip.
Hotel workers don't make a good wage - but they SHOULD pay attention to the needs of guests.

If I've stayed for more than a day I've left one significant tip at the end of my stay but I actually prefer they not enter while I'm staying unless I request it.

ah, well, I am the queen of kleenex and I do like towels, so I expect them to come in and empty trash, refill kleenex and TP, and leave fresh towels. Now, I will tip daily, like a restaurant.....
