You have to bear in mind that you don't always know *exactly* which battery you are getting. For instance, the 3-cell Aspire Ones like mine shipped with a 2100mah, a 2400mah (like mine) or a 2800mah battery, depending on luck of the draw. Other manufacturers have had similar shuffling in their batteries, so you may not get the same battery as the one that you saw a review for.
That said, both the Asus and the Samsung have proven that they can get long life between charges. I've heard over 7 hours easily from a 6-cell battery. Some Acers managed 8-1/2, though for reasons previously discussed, 6-1/2 is more typical.
If battery life is uber-important, the Samsung is your best bet, and it's not a bad machine overall. However, for the same price, you could get an Acer like mine and a third-party 9-cell pack to push out past eight hours and still have a little money left over.
I haven't seen enough of the Toshiba NB200 to really recommend it one way or the other.

You're reading I am still trying to decide on a netbook - been reading reviews for months now - does anyone have any good advice? So far, I am choosing between Asus 1000 he, Samsung N120, and Toshiba NB200. Long battery life is important.

Jerv - you are such a star!
which Acer do you have? Does the 9 cell battery have an effect on the size of the machine? - I mean - will it stick out the back?

I have an 8.9" model with WinXP, 1GB RAM, 160GB hard drive, and a 3-cell pack.
I am actually glad I only have a 3-cell as mine is flush and follows the curves on the back edge.
Here is a pic on an 8.9" AA1 with a factory 6-cell. http://www.aspireoneuser.com/2008/10/28/acer-aspire-one-a150-in-black-with-6-cell-battery/
Here is a pic on an 8.9" AA1 with a third-party 9-cell. http://weblogs.asp.net/guybarrette/archive/2009/06/25/acer-aspire-one-from-2-to-9-hours-battery-life.aspx
I've looked at others and found that pretty much *any* netbook that doesn't have the battery sticking out the back is a 3-cell battery.
Bear in mind that the 8.9" AA1 is also one of the smallest ones out there to begin with. If you ever saw one up close, you would realize how small they really are and possibly decide on a 10.1" one instead. Both have the same screen resolution (1024x600) but the 10.1" may be a little easier to read for some people. The 10.1" AA1 is more directly comparable to the others you mentioned.
I read a bit more on the Toshiba and it looks decent enough, but I'm not sure if the extra $$$ is worth it.

I have finally done it! I went for the asus 1000he! I looked at the aspire, but it was the battery life that i needed - i really fancied the smaller size though - that 8.9" would have been excellent.
In the end, I whittled it down to the Asus, the Toshiba and the Samsung.
They really were pretty much of a muchness - so i went on price, and the best price i could get was the asus.
Thanks for all your input on this! You have been a wonderful help!

No problem.
The Asus 1000H-series is the only decent product in the Asus netbook lineup, but it *is* a good machine and I doubt you will be disappointed.
