LV is 'hurting' right now like many other vacation spots. Check online to look at the deals being made. I would definitely stay 'on the strip' as it puts most of the casinos within walking distance or the CATS (bus system) readily available. Look at Planet Hollywood, Cesars, Treasure Island, Wynn, Flamingo which are just about in the middle. MGM, New York, Mandala Bay are more on the outer edge. Golden Nugget is in 'old' town (Fremont Street is super!) but you'd have to take the bus to get to the 'newer' main strip.
I like the Wynn... ultra swanky. Middle of the strip.
I really liked the Planet Hollywood :)
