What is a pet that can live alone with just me as a companion, doesn't smell too bad, pretty low maintenance, cheap to keep, not a dog or cat. Either a reptile, bird or rodent, no insects.

Well they are not always cheap because they require special dust for their coat.

    Try a chinchilla.

As long as they have something to chew and a nice big bowl of dust to roll in, food and water... They are fine.

unfortunately about the only thing that fits your requirements is either a short hair cat or a cactus.
even cage/aquarium pets require a surprising amount of time and attention. you have to constantly clean out their containers, refill water and food dishes, etc
i know, my mother thinks shes dr. dolittle or something.
did you know it is legal to buy a baby alligator in some states? I DO NOW!

Guinea Pigs(Cavies), are excellent pets. Very affectionate, fun, and loving. They are cheap and do not smell. Their cage will smell if you don't clean it properly, but they themselves never smell! You can get their food pretty cheap, and most grocery stores will give you left over lettuce for free. Give one a go. They go better as a pair, but if one dies then you have to replace it so the other doesn't get lonely. You are best to go with one for starters! Some people complain about their squeaking sound, which I find just stupid, because it's really cute! Sounds more like a bird whistle. If you whistle, they will whistle back. I've even taught mine small parts of tunes! Guinea Pigs can also be litter trained if you get a pup and start early enough!

Rabbits, hamsters, guinea pigs, rats, mice, are all good choices. I would also like to suggest a parakeet or a cockatiel. They can be a bit noisy, but they make excellent pets and are easy to clean up after. When you do decide on a type of pet, go to your local pet store and buy books to explain how to care for it, or look up care and training tips online.

(Question asker here) Well I can definatly spend alot of time with it in the evenings. And I don't mind taking care of it alot. The main things are it doesn't smell and can live without a same-animal companion.
