According to what I read, executioners would hold the head up right away after chopping it off. Most of the time, they got a shock induced blank stare and then death a few seconds later.
But every now and then, someone managed to stay present enough look back at the executioner and some even tried to speak.
It didn't last long. The head loses blood pressure very fast and consciousness is lost.

Yes. The head usually appears live seconds after the execution because of shock. My only knowlege of this is reading into midevel liturature, but I heard the experince only lasts a few minutes at most right after the execution. I belive Mary I of Scotland was executed by the guillotine after her alleged involvement to assassinate Queen Elizabeth. Hope this is helpful.
