Hyundai 1999 Accent: why when i drive it stays in third gear even when i stop either way.when i turn it off then on again it goes back to normal for a few weeks but then it stay in first gear even when i stop so is this a electric or mechanical problem?

My car jerks when I want to move from a stop and atimes goes back despite the auto gear being in drive. how can I fix the problem

The clutch on my 97 Saturn does not always engage in second and third gear from a stop. Many times I have to force it into gear. Third through fifth seem to be fine. Can somebody tell me what the problem might be?
