    I generally start with the Title. Usually the title is what helps me create my characters. And then, with the creation of my characters, i start the plot. It also helps if you already have an idea of what the story in about, generally. (Ex: love, horror, fiction, fantasy ect.)

    you need to be inspired, take yourself away to somewhere you have never been before & just observe & let your mind run away with it's self!! :-/

    what I do is close my eyes and think of words that pop in my head then write them down. From these words I weave a story.

    Good luck!

    You should first have an idea what you want to write about. I usually get ideas from everyday life. I observe other people and then ask myself, what if this happened? If you can't get an idea, write down ideas with the question, what if this happened? After writing down a list, see which one stands out to you the most.

    Then start with one character, you can use a letter to represent him or her, then slowly write the story and jsut keep writing whatever comes to mind. It should help. It's what I do. After writing for pages or chapters, similar things should show up. The title might come later if not right away. A title before the story will help you organize details, but it might not always come before the story or the plot.

    A GREAT book that will inspire you and help you with questions like that is Stephen King's 'On Writing'. It's nonfiction and I believe you can find it in the autobiography (?) section at the library. It's a short read and actually a book you might want to buy and keep on hand.

    it may sound a bit too obvious, but just start writing. Write and write as often as possible to get your first draft finished. Then re-write it, then re-write it again, then possibly again!!! Then once you are happy with the story, plot and characters you can go through it and edit it, checking grammer and so on. Then if you havent give it up by then, edit it another time and bobs your aunt- Novel finished! (Unless you feel it would benefit from one more re-write or edit, of course).

    Well, here's how I do things. I get some peppermint, and some seriously inspiring music. Then I go on with a VERY basic plot line. I think about whether I want it to be of this universe of from an AU, and if it's an AU how do things go on around there. Then I think of what the main conflict would be. After that I think up the characters and their personality, that way I can base the rest of the plot line on how these characters would react to a situation... Hm, I think me and my simple mindedness made it sound complicated... It's not though. XD And if I'm stuck finding a general plot I come up with a title. I find this to be pretty fun to mess with, not to mention it can give you some good ideas.

    Hope that at least helps a little bit. ^^;

    I recommend "Zen and the art of Writing" by Ray Bradbury. My inclination is to just type out all his advice, but instead I will say that I start with the title or the plot based on his teachings.
    Oh, and he says you should know how long the story will be and that a serious author should NEVER write a book first. Start with short stories. He says you need at least 100 before you are ready to write a book. He wrote from the age of 12-30, just short stories. Of course, his first book was Fahrenheit 451, an unarguable masterpiece.
