  • I don't know the proper family name, perhaps what Mensan said. But I know it is the same as a peach except with a peach you eat the fruit and throw away the seed (although some varieties the seeds are edible, others are toxic) and with an almond, you eat the seed and throw away the fruit. Almond trees can also polinate peach trees. Around here, the almonds usually flower too early and then we get a freeze and they all drop off. The only way I get almonds is if I cover the flowering branches each time we are suppossed to get a freeze. This year, I lost my peaches and plums to a late freeze, but that is not usually a problem with those.
