Question

Help answer this question below.

I have finished a bachelor's in psychology and paralegal certification. Problem is, I live in Michigan and can't find a decent job. Should I go to grad school for psychology in order to ride out the recession/depression or should I just keep persisting?

  • I would seriously consider getting the heck out of Michigan. There are so many out of work people there, that it makes your situation all that much harder. Try areas where there are large populated cities and check that out. Good luck.

Getting more qualifications can never hurt - if you can afford it! Especially if you enjoy studying.
Do you have a career in mind? Do you want to be a psychologist? or a paralegal ? (I must say, it does seem an odd combination). Look at job ads (in other areas?) and see what kind of qualifications they are asking for.. then decide.

Keep job hunting. If you get a graduate degree in psychology, you'll simply be piling one impractical, unmarketable degree on top of another. I did the same thing because I couldn't find a job in my field (English), and found that with a master's, I was overqualified for most jobs. The fact remains that even though the social sciences and humanities add a valuable perspective to the world, their market value is relatively low. Why don't you target your search towards jobs that would let you use your paralegal certification? I'm sure there are some, even in Michigan. If you continually struggle to find work, perhaps you should move. Of all the 50 states, Michigan is most affected by the recession.
