Help answer this question below.
Left click on "View" at the top and make sure the setting is on "Show large icons" or "Thumbnails". That should bring back the images.
UPDATE: In Vista, open your My Pictures folder and click on Organize (on the toolbar).
Open "Folder and Search Options", then the View tab. Uncheck "Always show icons, never thumbnails". Scroll down a bit and check "Remember each folder's view settings". Then Apply and OK.

I can only see icons, but I don't want to see icons. I want to see the actual picture when I open my pictures folder.
1. Open the Start Menu.
2. Find the search box, located at the bottom of the start menu.
3. In the Search Box, type gpedit.msc and Press 'Enter' on the Keyboard or click the Magnifying Glass icon to the right of the Search Box. This is to launch the "Local 'Group Policy' Editor".
4. If a UAC prompt pops up, click Continue.
5. In the Left Pane, click on / expand User Configuration; Administrative Templates; 'Start Menu and Taskbar'.
6. In the Right Pane, find and Right Click 'Turn off taskbar thumbnails', and from the Context Menu Strip, click 'Properties' (in Windows 7 Beta, you may have to double click).
7. From the Dialog Prompt Box that has popped up, find the 'Not Configured' or 'Disabled' Radio Button, and Check (Dot) it. You can re-enable this module by clicking 'Enabled'.
8. Close the Local Group Policy Editor window.
9. Reboot / Log-Out and then Log In again.
10. Reap the benefits if successful!
I hope this helps you.

You're reading I changed my computer settings so that all pictures, gifs, jpgs do not show me a preview of the picture. It is a generic Windows icon and the file name. How do I change the settings so I can see the pictures when I access the folders without clicking?

Thanks icy. Sorry, I'm not sure what exactly you're asking. Could you give more details?

ty, what i am saying just viewing a folder with pics i see them as pics, but if i want to upload an image here on ab, i have to choose just by file name no image can be seen. does that help ?
by -Icy- on July 17th, 2009
So you'd like to upload by image, not file name? OK, just change the view like this:
When you want to upload an image, hit the blue "Upload Image" button, then click on "Browse" to find your picture. Then, at the top of the File Upload box, click on the little square icon called "View Menu" and change the view from Details to Thumbnails.
That's how it works in Windows XP. Vista's probably a lot like that.

LOL, get arounds, tut, tut.
Sometimes they don't work, and can be dangerous is a computer virus is changing the settings, its best to delete the virus (if any), with anti-virus software; and then use the safe consoles.
You need a ScD for Windows' security, customisation and operating system. Some people make out Linux is easier to customise, well Windows is much more better, but less easier, unless you know how :D.

Winter Rain, I updated my answer.
by wing.walker on July 17th, 2009
That's for folders and briefcases :D.
Can work, though.
Vista has a tendency of highlighting many boolean array checks at once, and yes it does work; depends on the cause, too.

How did you break it :D?
You did it the unsafe way, beware that Windows Explorer 6 and earlier, does not have a safeguard of offset setting by virii.
