  • "A system of seven archangels is an old tradition originating in Judaism. However, the earliest reference to a system of seven archangels as a group appears to be in Enoch I (the Book of Enoch) which is not part of the Jewish Scriptures, where they are named as Michael, Gabriel, Raphael, Uriel, Raguel, Zerachiel and Remiel. In the late 5th to early 6th century , Pseudo-Dionysius gives them as Michael, Gabriel, Raphael, Uriel, Chamuel, Jophiel, and Zadkiel. The earliest Christian mention is by Pope Gregory I who lists them as Michael, Gabriel, Raphael, Uriel, Simiel, Orifiel, and Zachariel. The Eastern Orthodoxy tradition venerates Michael, Gabriel, Raphael, Uriel, Selaphiel, Jegudiel, and Barachiel. Another Catholic variation lists them corresponding to the days of the week as: Michael (Sunday), Gabriel (Monday), Raphael (Tuesday), Uriel (Wednesday), Sealtiel (Thursday), Jhudiel (Friday)and Barachiel (Saturday). In the more modern angelology, different sources disagree on the names and identities of the seven archangels. In the Book of Enoch, Remeil is also described as one of the leaders of the 200 Grigori, the fallen angels. Various occult systems associate each archangel with one of the traditional seven "luminaries" — the Sun, Moon, Mars, Mercury, Jupiter, Venus, and Saturn — but there is disagreement as to which archangel corresponds to which body. The seven archangels figure in some systems of ritual magic, each archangel bearing a specific seal." Source and further information: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Seven_archangels ------- ADDED -------- "The angels mentioned in the older books of the Hebrew Bible are without names. Indeed, rabbi Simeon ben Lakish of Tiberias (230–270), asserted that all the specific names for the angels were brought back by the Jews from Babylon, and some modern commentators would tend to agree. Of seven archangels in the angelology of post-Exilic Judaism, only three, Gabriel, Michael and Raphael, are mentioned by name in the scriptures that gradually became accepted as canonical. Where a fourth archangel is added to the named three, to represent the four cardinal points, Uriel is generally the fourth (Jewish Encyclopedia). Uriel is listed as the fourth angel in Christian Gnostics (under the name Phanuel), by Gregory the Great, and in the angelology of Pseudo-Dionysius. Uriel is the third angel listed in the Testament of Solomon, the fourth being Sabrael. Uriel also appears in the Second Book of Esdras, an apocryphal addition in the tradition of apocalyptic literature made to Esdras, in which the prophet Ezra asks God a series of questions, and Uriel is sent by God to instruct him. According to the Revelation of Esdras, the angels that will rule at the end of the world are Michael, Gabriel, Uriel, Raphael, Gabuthelon, Beburos, Zebuleon, Aker, Arphugitonos. The last five listed only appear in this book and nowhere else in apocryphal or apocalyptic works." Source and further information: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Uriel
  • CHAP. 20.—And these are the names of the holy angels who watch: 2. Uriel, one of the holy angels, the angel of thunder and of trembling; 3. Rufael, one of the holy angels, the angel of the spirits of men; 4. Raguel, one of the holy angels, who takes vengeance on the earth and the luminaries; 5. Michael, one of the holy angels, namely set over the best portion of men, over the people; 6. Saraqâel, one of the holy angels, who is over the spirits of the children of men who induce the spirits to sin; 7. Gabriel, one of the holy angels, who is over the serpents and over the Paradise and the Cherubim.
  • The bible book you refer to is not part of the Bible canon. As for the term "archangel", it is quite self-explanatory, as it means "chief angel" over all the other angels. That would be Michael, Jesus in his pre-human existence.
  • There is only one archangel - Michael, and the very title "Archangel" tells us this. The prefix "arch," meaning "chief" or "principal," implies that there is only one archangel, the chief angel. In the Scriptures, "archangel" is never found in the plural. First Thessalonians 4:16, in speaking of the preeminence of the archangel and the authority of his office, does so in reference to the resurrected Lord Jesus Christ: "The Lord himself will descend from heaven with a commanding call, with an archangel’s voice and with God’s trumpet, and those who are dead in union with Christ will rise first." It is, therefore, not without significance that the only name directly associated with the word "archangel" is Michael.—Jude 9
  • Michael the Arc Angel. He is the only Arc angel.
  • actually lucifer was the highest of the angels ever created. thus if you are referring to an archangel as the one and only , he would have been it. next... archangels including michael are a title for the group of highest ranking angels..still loyal to God...that exist in the heavens and universe. there are more than seven, many more. we are privy to names of these seven and a few others. there are about 9 ranks of angels.
  • Can someone give me the BIBLICAL references of those other than Michael and Gabriel please? I find the 'close' and 'closer' comments by Dr James unhelpful.
  • There were Eight Archangels, one was casted out of heaven by God himself and his name was Lucifer. Most forget about him and his fighting with the Achangel Michael...The seven remaining are Ghamuel, Gabriel, Jophiel, Michael, Raphael, Uriel, and Aadkiel..all have a titles and all can be prayed to as well.
  • When Luciel (Bearer of Light) rebelled against God and became Lucifer, one entire choir/organization of angels followed him and was lost. Some of the angels from other choirs also dedicateded themselves to him in Lucifer's rebellion. "And there was a great battle in heaven, Michael and his angels fought with the dragon, and the dragon fought, and his angels: And they prevailed not, neither was their place found any more in heaven. And that great dragon was cast out, that old serpent, who is called the devil and satan, who seduceth the whole world; and he was cast unto the earth, and his angels were thrown down with him." Apoc 12:7-9 7 angels from the second lowest choir were so outraged by the offense committed to the dignity and honor of the Lord/god they set themselves between the Throne of God and the infernal offenders. Prepared to defend the honor and dignity of Lord. Most High and Mighty was awed by their heroic love he elevated them, enriching them with many new gifts and graces. They were given privilege of standing eternally gaurding the Throne of God to carry out the Divine Will. "And from the throne proceeded lightnings and voices and thunders; and there were seven lamps burning before the throne, which are the seven spirits of God." Apoc 4:5. This evidence proves that there are seven archangels. there more stories that explains the work of archangels. Michael, Raphael, Gabriel, Uriel are usually known as archangels due to their great deeds carried out by god's will. The rest are chosen from the list below Jehudiel Ramiel Sariel Barachiel Raguel Raziel Sealtiel Jerahmeel Hanael Metatron Izidkiel(Zadkiel) Kepharel Anael Ariel Cassiel Cammuel(different ways of describing this being) Jophiel Raziel Sachiel Sandalphon
  • In the scriptures it says that Gods best are never known. I am wondering what point you are trying to make by listing the known. Does it make you love God and your fellow human beings any better? In Indian Scripture they revere Shiva and Brahma. To them they were like Angels. It also says that there were many like Shiva and Brahma that were never named. Scripture also says that the Lord of Lords and the King of Kings would come. Do you know any of these other Lords and Kings? Food for thought.
  • Happy, Sleepy, Doc, Grumpy, Sneezy, Bashful, Dopey.
  • What is the scripture that says that there are seven archangels? The only one that I am aware of is Michael, and if there was more than one, he would not be "the archangel" or "chief angel". http://bible.cc/jude/1-9.htm
