A fossil of a species between human and other primates.

There seemed to be, in the 1850s, a huge gap between humans and other primates in the fossil record.

Scientists were looking for a "missing link" fossil something between humans and other primates.

Now many fossils have been found and the gaps are now tiny ones. The expression "missing link" is hardly used by scientists now.
