A symphony is often much larger, and usually has 100+ players. A smaller group of classical musicians is called an orchestra, and usually has about 40 members.

A symphony is a long piece of music, requiring a big classical orchestra to play it. A symphonic orchestra has the right number of instruments and players to play a symphony. Orchestras that do not have enough musicians to perform symphonies, are 'just' an orchestra.
