Because people think they understand others but they don't know jack-shit. They're just a bunch of ignorant pricks.

People are afraid of the dark. Unfortunately, until more light is shed on the topic of mental illness many people will continue to fear it. As if because you are mentally ill then you will just "snap", "go crazy", and attack someone (the one afraid). There is an entire spectrum of mental illnesses; none of them are to be taken lightly, but it does not make you "dangerous" to society if you have (for instance) an anxiety disorder. Simultaneously, many people with mental illness live in fear of letting their loved ones, family, and friends know of their illness; not everyone you "trust" can be trusted with this information. I know the heartache and sorrow of mental illness and how it affects the individual and the people close to them. More education and additional scientific awareness of mental illness is needed; more funding, obviously, too. We can't just have drug manufacturers advertise their "Anti-fill-in-the-blank-illness" and also tell us they don't know exactly how the medicine "works".
Just my take, tolerance and understanding of mental illness must be taken more seriously. :)

My grandmother had a daughter (my Aunt) who was severely handicapped mentally. She lived to be 35 but her mind was that of a 3 y/o. By growing up around her, it never entered my mind to treat her any other way, we just treated her like any other 3 y/o. When I got older and saw the way strangers acted around her, it was sickening. People can be so exceptionally cruel when someone is different from them. I think it's a sign of mental illness on their part, not the handicapped person.

Most people don't really understand that other people can be quite different from themselves. They think, "Everyone must be pretty much like me." But when they see someone who looks or acts differently from how they do, they are quite uneasy and stand-offish.

Some ppl are so narrow minded that they could look through a key hole with both eyes. They are the ones that are stupid for not being understanding/compassionate! I work on a Psych Unit so I have been exposed so maybe thats y I am compassionate

It's not that we don't recognize your being a human, but it's true that a lot of people show unnecessary disgust or insensitivity, which is hurtful. I can't speak for others, but personally, I must admit to treating people with obvious mental disabilities differently, only because it's hard to know if their condition is too severe to carry on a normal conversation. Of course it makes me feel rude, but it's like, I don't know what to say or what they talk about. They are usually very coddled by parents or caretakers and it's often hard to make conversation with a person who's life is so much different than your own--just because it's more comfortable to stay around what's familiar. I hope this helps give you a different perspective, despite the fact that life is very unfair.

I guess they have no idea what is going on. Maybe they have lived sheltered lives, try to forgive them, they don't know any better. :0)
