Judo is a systematized do or way of practicing a series of Jitsus (or jutsus) that was codified by Jigoro Kano. It involves throwing technique (naga waza), holding or control techniques (osaekomi waza), choking techniques (shimi waza) and joint locking techniques (kansetsu waza). Initially it also contained striking techniques (atemi waza), but these have fallen largely out of practice in modern Judo.
From its beginning until the 1960's Judo was governed by the Kodokan, the main school founded by Kano. In the 1964 Judo finally became an official olympic sport and International control shifted to the very olympic oriented IJF (International Judo Federation). After that time there tended to be a greater and greater migration towards Olympic Judo versus the traditional method taught by Kano. There have been several attempts to establish an International governing body for traditional Judo that is not olympic judo oriented. Traditional judo can still be found being practiced in schools affiliated with one of the IJF recognized organizations, though most ranking requirements are still very olympic judo based.

Literal translation from the Japanese is "the gentle/yielding way." Judo is a method of turning an opponent's strength and overcoming by skill rather than sheer strength, similar to wrestling.
