Do most liberals believe help comes before punishment and atonement?

    I think you will find that when you break it down to such broad concepts, there is little difference between "conservatives" and "liberals".

    Where you will tend to find differences is that conservatives can make political hay by demonizing the poor, the urban, and ethnic minorities.

    Hence, the rhetoric and punishments for crimes typically committed by those groups gets ratcheted up as part of "get tough on crime" campaigns.

    Meanwhile, the fact that 'middle class' crimes, like lying on insurance claims and returning clothes for refunds after wearing them, are far more pervasive and far more costly gets ignored.

    Help is offered before crimes are committed. And help with atonement comes after punishment.

    Probably. Liberals do tend to blame everything and everyone before they blame a criminal...unless the criminal is an elected politician. But, the party of the malcreant is also a big factor. Liberals overlook a great deal of crimes or malfeasance by those of their favorite political bent and demand "justice" when those of another party are caught in the "act", whatever act it may be,...like spitting on the sidewalk...
