    it is the most popular grape from the boreaux region. it could have the bouquet of currant, black cherry, plum, Oak, vanilla, coconut, sweet wood, violet, rose, smoke, toast, tar

    Spice wise: caramel, clove, bay leaf, green peppercorn
    Herbal: bell pepper, green olive

    merlot is one of the Bordeaux 5 (cab sauv, merlot, cab franc, malbec and petit verdot). it is generally considered to produce a wine with lower acid than cabernet sauvignon (consequently, slightly sweeter fruit). it was traditionally used to soften blends (which is why it is such a popular mate to cab sauv), but shines in its own right on the right bank (and many other wines around the world). if harvested too early, exposed to too much rain or over-produced can be very boring (or worse, unpleasantly astringent).

    Merlot is a wine style where the majority of grapes used to make the wine are of the Merlot grape agricultural variety.
    It is a red wine.
    I guess you could also say that Merlot is a grape variety, to answer this question, rather than using the wine definition.
