As confused as the guy next door.

Question

Help answer this question below.

My "Norton Anti Virus" subscription will be up for renewal in few days. They keep asking me to renew it but I am considering switching to their rival for a better deal. I have heard that "Norton" will keep harassing even after the "due date". Is it true?

Once you insert the code/serial for the software or any software that needs a code, the software should not harass you, but Norton will take control of your computer in time, as it takes up too much memory. Here is my suggestions.

    For a PAID Anti-Virus, use:

    1) Bit defender (This was rated the Top Anti-Virus of 2009, look here:

    http://anti-virus-software-review.toptenreviews.com

    2) Kaspersky Internet Security (Is rated 2nd, but i have used this, and its features are excellent, and the updates are good too.

    3) Avira (paid version) or Avast (paid version)

    Avira:

Avira does have slightly higher detection rates than Avast, but Avira does not have all the features Avast has, like the Boot-Time-Scanner etc.

    Avast:

Avast does have a few false positives, but apart from that, it has all the features you need to keep you safe, whatever you do. Avast does have a Professional version, but the Home Edition is just as good.

    For a FREE Anti-Virus, use:

    1) Avast (The best FREE Anti-Virus)
    2) Avira (The FREE version only includes Rookit and Virus protection, but does have slightly higher detection rates)
    3) Avg (I would use Avg as a last resort as it does have very low detection rates, but it is better than nothing).

Norton has very good protection but can take too much memory, therefore your computer will not run as fast as it could.

If you do a lot of gaming online, the best Anti-Virus would be ESET Nod32, as it is about 27mb, which i think is the lowest so far for an Anti-Virus program.

I hope this helps you, you can email me if you need anymore help or information.

I did as Jane G suggests and switched from Norton to Avast. I actually had a live person from Norton who assured me that my account was canceled. Still, when my account would have been due for renewal I got an email telling me they were about to charge my credit card for another year and I had to go online and cancel it again. Other than that they didn't bug me. But keep an eye on your email, it's a hell of a lot easier to stop the charge than get it back afterward.

And be advised, you can't just remove Norton using Add/Remove Programs...you need the Norton Removal Tool:

norton sucks anyway. when an anti-virus becomes that popular then virus programmers tend to anticpate it. i use threatfire when i am on windows. it has been exceptional. the free version is better then anything i have ever paid for and it dose not kill my RAM. but nortans biggest advantage is that they will gaurentee your safty, and fix the bugs if any.
