To make us more individual? in Wales they sometimes call people by their middle name rather than their first name. My middle name is Rhiannon :)

To give us something for our parents to tack on to our names when we're in trouble.

    "JONATHAN XAVIER!"
    "DENNIS JAMES!"
    "BETHANY SUSAN!"

That, or something to separate you from the other Joe Smiths.

My middle name is Cantras. ;)

It's a cultural thing. Some cultures have many names and surnames. Like, Latin cultures. Usually, you get your name, and two surnames, one from each parent. The middle name (1st surname) comes from the father's name, and the last name (2nd surname) is the mother's maiden name. Sometimes, these two surnames may be found separated by y (meaning "and"). THEN, when a woman gets married, they throw on the husbands last name at the end of it all. Maria Rosa (first) Calderon (father) y (and) Gonzalez (mother) de Martinez (literally, of Martinez, meaning property of basically).

I think they're a way to give us a little more separation from others who may have common first and surnames. Like John Smith, how many of those guys are there? But there may only be one John Nathaniel Smith.
Mine's Elizabeth... A name that's been in my family for ages, my Mum's first name, my Granny's middle name, her Mum's first name, and so on.
