In my industry, Silicon Valley computer software, wearing any sort of tie to a job interview will definitely cost you points. What, are we supposed to be impressed that you tied a bit of cloth around your neck?

I would think he was a great improviser, and if stuff goes down he'd can fix it.

I don't really think it would affect my opinion of him any way or the other.

I'd just assume he doesn't know how to tie a neck tie... or I'd assume that they were lazy. It would depend how they were dressed, spoke, and acted.

Yes, I would. Clip on ties are for children, not adults. Everyone in our company has at least some contact with customers, vendors, etc. For someone to go into a job interview with a clip on tie, tells me that they are probably not able to handle the simplest of tasks or make good decisions.

People thinlk he's lazy others think he's good at being effective with time - maybe that's all he can afford! Who really cares what kind of tie he has? He's dressed fine for interview, isn't he? Look, people assume things things from nonsense like this & they usually wrong. Why discriminate because of a neck tie? Why? Some psychologist says it talk about character so you do it? Please - use common sense here. You don't know what peoples go through in their life. This is like those ridiclous question they ask on interview to understand who you is undernath. That's just all nonsense.

Such petty stuff like this & people wonder why there is so much descrimination - this is perfect example of how people think becoming boss makes them a person to rule over all the rest. Its just a job, its just an interview & just a tie. And if you count that agaisnt him, then you have the problem. This is snobbery to an extreme and is no bette than "I don't like your hair style" "I dont like your colour nail polish" "I think your skirt is one inch too high" "I don't like this line on your resume/CV" so you don't get the job. Is than better than racial, age or other descrimination? You should know that lower income use ties less & this is really a form of descrimination against the poor.

Can he do the job? Is he reliable? THose is much more important question, and judgeing from the tie is like judgeing book by its cover. So much for freedom of expression in America (even when he IS wearing a tie!)

If you are a security guard, wearing a real necktie can be hazardous. If he is a career security officer, I might see it as a positive trait. Other than that, I would have to say it would be a negative.

I would assume that he is a bit different but it wouldn't make any difference when I assessed him against the selection criteria.

Not at all. In my experience, just the fact that you thought to put on a tie is a plus!

What sort of job are you applying for? Be sure a tie is appropriate before you go in. I work in advertising and I've never seen anyone dress in a suit and tie to interview, not even for Account Service, the folks commonly called "the suits" by the rest of us.

If you're interviewing in a law firm or a corporate office of some sort, have someone tie a real tie for you then slip it on. Even if you have to go to a department store to have it done.
