I take 1 or 2 at the most, at ant given time.

I will not take anymore until maybe 6 hours later, at the earliest, and that is very rare.

I usually take more. Like Advil....I take 3 or 4 of them and it recommends 1 or 2. I take 2-3 Tylenol. The recommended amount just don't work for me. +5

It depends on the pain. In the past, doctors have prescribed me 800mg Ibuprofen pills to help with any pain associated with whatever they did. So if I have a real whopper of a headache or tooth pain or something similar, I'll take as many as 4 of the 200mg over-the-counter pills.

I wear a fentanyl patch so it's very hard to take more than perscription. And, I'd hate to overdose on this heavy duty pain med.

    Legend In Your Own Mind

I was a heroin addict and have been a methadone patient for over 6 yrs so i have an outrageously high tolerance to opiate pain medication. When I get any prescribed I usually double or triple it because doctors seem to think everyone taking methadone doesn't feel pain which is patently absurd and a lie.
When I am in pain I seldom get prescriptions because of that and end up having to suffer with nothing for pain.
They don't even give me scripts to get teeth pulled.. It's outrageous. Next time I get a tooth pulled I'll probably get pain medication on the street because of this and i have prided myself on the fact i have been drug free except for my prescribed methadone dose. It's a real bitch to have to self medicate when i shouldn't have to. Government bullshit causes this kind of absurdity.

Depends on your pain tolerance as well as your pain level... But... Recommended amounts are the best idea (never take in combination with other pills) and if you must take more that the recommended amount; NEVER take more than 5 at a time and wait 6 hours between doses... NEVER take more than 10 a day either... It messes up your liver and WILL kill you...

    Hope this helps... :D

    Follow the bottle.
Four acetaminophen/ advil /tylenol is prescription strength.
Do not have more than 8 per day ever.
If you have 8 per day, don't go more than 2 days in a row.
My mom is a nurse so she knows her stuff for topics like this.
You don't want liver damage, you already are getting that, Amy!

I generally take half the recommended amount and see how it goes.

And to tell you whether there would be any side effects for taking a double dosage of your painkillers, I would need to know what they are.

But typically, no there aren't any *serious* side effects. Depending on what you take, it can be hard on your liver or thin your blood too much.

It, of course, depends on the pain meds you're taking.

You DO know that the government is discussing removing Vicodin and Percocet off the market, and change the maximum allowable dosage for all acetametaphin-based products because of the danger to liver and life, right? See http://abclocal.go.com/wjrt/story?section=news/health&id=6893972 (sorry about the ad, but the guy explains it well), http://www.cnn.com/2009/HEALTH/06/30/acetaminophen.fda.hearing/index.html , http://trusted.md/feed/items/mdjosephkim/2009/06/30/government_panel_may_pull_drugs_containing_acetaminophen , http://www.clevelandleader.com/node/10514

Personally, I take a bit more of the OTC. But that's because I'm bigger than the model I understand that they use to create the pills. If prescribed, I take what's prescribed.
