The "Word of Wisdom" is the common name of a section of the Doctrine and Covenants, a book considered by many churches within the Latter Day Saint movement to consist of revelations from God. It is also the name of a health code based on this scripture, practiced most strictly by The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS Church), and to a lesser extent, some other Latter Day Saint movement denominations (Wikipedia)." Mark said that, "Nothing outside a man can make him 'unclean'...(Mark 7:15, NIV)." Now, at the risk of upsetting many mormons, the "Word Of Wisdom" was handed down by Mormon prophets and is their interpretation of what they believe God revealed to them. Mark, on the other hand, is a documentation of what is believed to have been said by the Son of God. Please note: Mormons do not believe in the same God of the Protestant church. They do no believe in the trinity. They believe that God the father and God the Son are two separate and distinct beings.
The Word of Wisdom was a warning to the saints, to confound conspiring men in the last days. In the days of Christ, did they ahve any foods or substances that were like those today? Did they have tobacco in Israel? Liquors that compare to the ones today? Can you call a drunkard a holy man? Or an addict a saint? We are here to overcome the frailties of the body and sin. Isn't the journey easier without the influences of these toxins? Do we want to lose ourselves in ancient text or actually use our heads and be accountable for ourselves? If we should blindly follow this verse, that nothing we eat can defile us, then go drink some kerosine, you'll soon realize the wisdom in this commandment.
IT IS SIMPLE. As a Mormon, things that Jesus said is trumped by Joseph and each succeeding prophet since Joseph.
to be clear Mark was explaining Christ's denial of the jewish laws of being kosher (i apologize if i have misspelled this) and saying that we should be more careful about our effect on other people then on what is eaten.
as for the word of wisdom mormons believe it to be a revelation from God to modern-day profits
and further in rebuttal to nice guys comment we believe in the same god that the bible proclaims , the same god that jesus is the son of and proclaimed, we believe in the father son and the holy ghost. so unless the protestants believe in a different god than is in the bible then you are mistake that we don't believe in the same god whether we believe he shares the same form and has the same teachings is immaterial.
Good question, he wasn't simply saying that food that enters our body doesn't corrupt it--he was not of course excusing the use of drugs or alcohol. We ought to be careful about what we say because it can "defile" us.

You're reading If obeying the Word of Wisdom—which tells us to abstain from coffee, tea, alcohol and tobacco—is important for our exaltation, why did Jesus say that there is nothing that can enter a man to make him defiled (Mark 7:15)?

I'm not at all offended as a member of the Church. We just hold a different perspective in that we believe that Christ spoke to Joseph Smith Jr. and gave him the "Word of Wisdom."

Why did Joseph Smith continue to smoke cigars and drink, after the word of weisdom was alledgedly handed/revealed to him?

In answer to "Mr. Joe..Fraud"'s question, it was originally given as "counsel" and was later made into commandment. In fact to be totally honest, I respectfully disagree with his claim that Joseph Smith Jr. used cigars and alcohol.
To anyone who wishes to criticize the LDS Church, Joseph Smith Jr., or the Book of Mormon, please realize that I don't need to argue with anyone about my beliefs. As Robert D. Hales stated, "Meekness is not weakness." However, I would love to share my beliefs with anyone who is interested in learning about the LDS Church.

How do you explain the liquor license that Joseph had, to sell in the store he owned in the town he own? What of the liquor store that was in his little house (mansion)? Where these located for guests to use, or where they just an over sight on Jr's part?
