A cockpit voice recorder is an electronic tape recording device that makes up half of the 'black box' in an aircraft. The voice recorder is automatically switched on and cannot be turned off from within the cockpit. It records two main sounds- first being any noise in the cockpit, recorded with usually one or two microphones. The second is any use of the radio headsets. This is to make sure any transmissions or communication between pilots is clearly heard.
TIP: The second half of the black box records electrical systems, hydraulics and other aircraft information such as altitude, airspeed, etc.
