Par refers to the number of shots that a golfer should need to take to complete a hole. So a par 5 hole is one that a golfer should need to take five shots to complete. A complete round is usually par 72, that means to complete the whole course 72 shots should be taken. If less than 72 shots are required, the golfer is said to be __ shots under par. More than this and he is said to be ___ over par (and so not doing so well).

These are usually the longest holes on the course, or perhaps have a nasty turn whereby a couple of shots are required to get to the bend and then more shots are required to turn and reach the green. Par sixes do exist but are very rare.
