shiraz is the Australian name for syrah. this is due to the the argument between the Australians and the French over the origins of syrah. the French claim that the grape was born in the Rhone valley and travelled around the world from there. the Australians claim that the grape was born in ancient Persia (hence, Shiraz) and travelled around the world from there.

Australian shiraz has become so popular that other producers around the world are using that name for their syrah.

It is true that shiraz is the more common name for the syrah grape, native of Northern RHone valley. The claim that shiraz stems from the town of Shiraz (in modern Iran) is a factoid. The grape is demonstrably (DNA analysis) a cross between the two archaic French varieties mondeuse blanc and dureze. The wines of Shiraz were white, incidentally.
The best explanation lies in the unstable ortography in early 19th century French - Busby, who introduced the grape variety to Australia, wrote the name as scyras. This may quite likely be the form he was given by locals, despite the actual pronounciation being syrah, as it still is - however he wrote it down, and it was read ... so it goes.
