"The Method" is considered to be Constantine Stanislavsky's technique. Other merited techniques come from Checkhov, Meisner, and Utah Hagen. "Training the American Actor" encompasses all four techniques and is a worthwhile read. I would stay away from Lee Strasberg's work because he studied under Stanislavsky for only a short time and then ran off to America and taught the narrow scope of what he learned. Hope this helps!
