They are all volunteers who act as un-armed stewards rather than police. They do really mundane things including checking tickets and showing spectators to their seats. The police actually police Wimbledon (with the assistance of registered and certified security personnel) and not the members of the armed forces. =)
It has nothing to do with terrorism (which is actually the responsibility of the police to defend against on home soil), and is a tradition which is also open to members of the Fire service too.
Possible target for terrorists, so maybe the obvious presence of the Army would fend them off because they'd think it was too secure.
The Army are more than capable of securing an area without their presence even being seen, so their visibility makes me think it's to fend people off.
It is one of Great Britain's National Treasure. And right now, Iran and GB are in a political war. Just making sure nothing tragic happens to Wimbledon. I am glad because Wimbledon is one of my favorite sporting event.
First off, it's in England, so it would make sense in that respect. Secondly, huge gatherings like Wimbledon are often targets of terrorism, and it is hoped that a visible presence would prevent any such activity.

In almost every individual sport (golf, boxing, etc) the winner raises his/her arms in triumph upon winning. But in tennis, the winner descends to knees or back more often than not. Why?

So they kind of add to the royal heritage feel to wimbledon rather than acting on a security. I understand. I don't see them at football, only the wimbledon tennis which has a royal box. Thanks Jadey.

Yup, apparantly. Although of course if anything were to happen they would be duty bound to intervene. Any event that royalty visit, including football, would have armed forces attend with them =)
