Carry a riding whip. Don't use it on the horse. Use it like your life depends on it next time you see him. Go for his face. You can cut a person open with that whip. Make sure he doesn't forget it and make sure he'll be afraid to do it to you or anyone else again. Stay away from that area if you can, but he may move to another spot. So don't leave the barn without that whip.

My husband says to use a Jockey's crop or a beech limb. If someone questions you about it later, tell them you were trying to get your horse to jump out of the way in the heat of the moment and the drunk must have stepped in too close.

I don't know about the whip thing. It sounds good but if the guy grabs the whip, he can pull you off your horse.

Pepper spray not good. If it gets into the horse's eyes, nose plus the spray sound you could be dealing with a frightened, hurting horse.

I would stay on the horse. You are safer there than on the ground.

How is this guy getting so close to you? I would not allow anyone unfamiliar to me to get that close. Any strange person on the trail is cause to urge my horse up into a canter and beat feet towards whatever direction I could call safe.

Cell phone is the best but call from a safe area.

Get a German Shepherd or other big dog and have it go with you.

File a report with the police. They will at least be able to patrol that area. If there is a car around, try to get the license. It could be the drunk's.

    Stay safe... been there

    You get on that horse!
Go a different way if you feel better, maybe get a friend to ride with you
Make sure you carry your phone and make sure people know your route
If he does it again, report him!

Make sure that some one knows where you plan to go, and about how long you plan to be out. Carry a Cell Phone and USE IT, if needed.

Always think in terms of safety for BOTH yourself and your horse.

If someone tries to grab the reins, dismount, unless your horse is normally pretty calm, and you have an above average seat!

Take the horse WITH YOU, if you need to move away, do not leave your horse with a drunk!

Go to the nearest place where there are other people as soon as possible, and enlist their help.

If you can't get your horse safely away from the person, USE THAT CELL PHONE to call for help.

Remember, a drunk is not normally a rational person. Often if you keep your tone of voice easy, speak slightly softer than you normally might, be non-argumentative, calm, ask them questions...ask for help (even if you don't need direction...ask for some.....he might let go of the reins and point in some direction, giving you a chance to bolt for it!) They are easily confused by sane people...as long as you don't piss them off, you can often manipulate them to your benefit! <wink>
