  • Likely, it won't go up at all as a result of this claim. It is considered, in most cases, vandalism and should be covered under your comprehensive coverage. Typically, there is no surcharge or penalty for this type of claim. The only time I have seen it actually increase somebody's rate was when it happened over and over again. This is extremely (EXTREMELY) rare, but the young lady in question was obnoxious with a capital "O". She drove aggresively cut people off, threw things at other motorists, flipped the bird, you name it. Her car, as a result, way frequently keyed. We gave her an option: take a higher deductible to offset some of these claims or get put on a high risk policy. She took the higher deductible which actually decresed her rate. Still happened frequently--this is when she admitted to the adjuster that she threw something at another car and that they might have followed her. Then the whole truth came out after further questioning. We put her on the high risk policy and that doubled her rates.
  • Some companies will increase rates if a certain number of claims are input in any specified time period. Always ask your insurance professional to look at your underwriting history and tell you when the last comprehensive claim was and how many you have had so that you can decide whether or not to put the claim in. Also, with some companies, if you have 2 "not at fault" accidents, they will count as 1 "at fault" accident and the rating on the policy could increase. I will never say don't put a claim in, but I always say think about it first! And, always ask questions of your insurance professional. That is what they are there for. Don't make decisions by what your friends tell you, go to the source.
