Since the 707 survived, there's no reason the 747 wouldn't. As noted by the 707 pilot and the straightdope.com link, the roll is a 1G manuever and wouldn't put excess stress on the airframe. As long as the 747 had enough altitude, it should survive OK. Any passengers inside...that's another matter...;-D...

I agree with Old School. As long as the 747 have enough altitude, it should be able to complete a roll. Stress on the airframe...hmm...i have some doubt..a 747 is very different from a 707

they put those airplanes through hell when they test them. I'd be willing to bet that the airframe / wings would support these maneuvers.
