Here in Kentucky, we do the same thing on election day. You can't even sell alcohol in supermarkets until the polls close.

It seems a sensible thing to do to me so that people cannot complain they were drunk when they choose the wrong Politicians. it is far better for people to be sober when they vote.

It is not just Mexico. Even in India the Liquor shops and bars are closed one day before the elections and on the vote counting day. Probably to prevent very enthusistic celebrations by party men.

They are scared that drunk voters will not turn up at the voting booth. As someone else said, it is not just Mexico. I know for a fact that Peru does it too.

To add to Suby, liquor is a potent tool of the political parties to tempt lay folks to vote for them.Here they already buy crates of such stuff and give the bottles once you come out of the polling booth.Proxy voting is the cause also.
