Question

Help answer this question below.

I am 27 years old and I'm thinking about starting college to be a professional pilot. My question is, do you think I should go for the professional pilot degree or should I go with something shorter in a two year program like an EMT. Any pilots on here?

I've looked into some programs for my sons.

You can get an ATP license for anywhere from about $35,000 to maybe $75,000 from some professional pilot fast-track programs.

On the way you'll earn a CFII certificate and then you can instruct.

You will then spend quite a bit of time flying blood, cheques or even lobster before you land a job with a regional airline that will grossly underpay you and work your butt off.

Someday if enough people retire or die you might make left seat at a major airline. They will underpay you and throw away your pension when they declare bankruptcy.

It's rough life... But I would do it in a heart beat if I was your age and had the $$$

First, if you can go to school full time, a good EMT course shouldn't take more than 6 months.

As a one-time EMT, here's the problem I ran into. It's never going to make you a lot of money. If you want something better you can become a paramedic but's that's not great pay, either. You can hire on with a fire department, but being a firefighter has to be your thing.

I think getting a pilot's license would be much more expensive, but the range of jobs is much, much wider and the pay would be better.

    Good luck with your decision.

If you have the opportunity to go with your dream of becoming a pilot GO FOR IT!!! You are still young. If you don't do it, you will look back years from now and regret not having done it.

I have about 13,000 hours with quite a bit flying airliners. My airline suddenly closed last year, and only a few of the well qualified pilots have found jobs - one in Africa, a few in the U.S., and a few in the Mideast. Some lost their homes. Some went into entirely different fields. Some such as myself are back in school in search of a more stable career. If you simply love to fly, don't mind being gone a lot, wouldn't mind living on around $20,000 a year, flying tired for a number of years, then I would say go for it.

I would HIGHLY discourage wasting money on a pilot type degree! Go for something you can use when you get furloughed. Definitely get a "real" degree! I can't imagine any actual commercial pilot recommending a pilot type degree!

I know so many furloughed pilots, I would really suggest you talk to a mix before committing to such an expensive career. Work rules, pay, and job stability sure isn't what it used to be (other than UPS and Fed. Ex.)!

If you go for it, good luck!
