I stopped taking the birth control pill 5 months ago and my periods just started again. It's different now -- it's lasting for almost a week and shows no signs of stopping. Is this normal?

you should still talk to a doctor, but many girls i've known have complained about problems adjusting after coming off the pill. I had a GF once that only had her period every 2 months then bleed for a 4 days solid, usually with terrible cramps, then she got on a cheap pill that made her bleed for a week (monthly) but made the cramps pretty light.
