Help answer this question below.
I'd turn around and start following them.
or, talk to the manager
or go to Lowes
Do what i did with a Police Officer, Stop and ask Can I help You?
I'd walk through the aisles and pick out a large item. I'd examine it, saying "Nope, this won't fit in my pocket," put it down and move to another item.
I dont understand why they follow me too. Someone once told me I shouldn't go shopping in a stripey pullover, wearing a mask and having a bag with the words SWAG printed on it. What is she, the fashion police ^^
As long as you aren't stealing, I wouldn't worry about it.
I know it's annoying, it happens to me all the time too. Apparently I give off some sort of shoplifter vibe, because whenever I shop alone, I get followed. I've never shoplifted a thing in my life.
I just try to ignore it, and if they get really close to me I look up and say 'hi' to them and smile. They give me funny looks.
If you really think that the observation is uncalled for, or overwhelming, or if they take it too far, you can ask to speak with the management. Explain that you feel uncomfortable shopping in their store because you get followed like you are a criminal. Ask what you did to get their attention, or if they follow everyone that way. Don't get upset, or threaten anything, because then you seem suspicious... I've worked retail, and lots of shoplifters throw fits about being followed. So don't throw a fit... be respectful, but explain that you won't be shopping there anymore if their surveillance activities continue in the same fashion.
That's weird. They are train NOT to do that. Welcoming the customer and making them feel valued and appreciated is The Home Depot's motto. If I was you, I'd complaint to the corporate customer care number.
I would stop and nicely ask them if there is a problem. If that did not help, I would ask to speak to the manager...and move up from there. Good Luck.
Honestly, just don't steal, then when they follow you they have nothing to go by. But if you feel like they are making you uncomfortable and making it obvious, and you aren't stealing (I don;t know or judge either way, just stating) talk to the store manager if you can. Talk to the highest available manager about it, because if their actions are unfounded then their behavior is rediculus, and should be stopped. I used to work security for a major retailer and it sounds like these guys are really bad at picking the people who actually do steal or they are just bored. Or you could be reading something into it that isnt there. Another question is, have you previously stolen from there and been caught? If you have, they are probably just wise to who you are and are protecting their assets. Good luck to ya, anyway.
You must be giving off "SUSPECIOUS" vibes or you are dressed in a manner they have been told, fits the profile of a shoplifter.
Either that or they find you attractive...
You could pretend to shoplift and turn the tables on them by accusing them of victimising you. If you are feeling kinda energetic and playful you could walk down the aisle to the end, run back up and get behind them and copy their walking pace.
Go to lowes.
Home Depot is screwed up. My friend worked there and they screwed her over!
Don't feel bad. I can't go anywhere without security guards following me. I guess because all my piercings and my tattoos? It gets me really mad at times. Lol!
Don't look so suspicious. You must look really tense to the clerks which was usally our first sign to keep an eye on somebody.
See if you want the Security to stop Following you around for Some time Just still something and get caught on purpose
How do you even know it was HD security. Is it always the same guy or do you think everyone is watching you? The stores around here don't have security guys in uniform or anything, so i don't know how you can tell.
Make sure they are following you, walk up to them and ask them, Why are you following me, Can I help you?
First, you need to stop stealing stuff from Home Depot. Second, you need to stop wearing the mask. And third, get a shirt that doesn't say "I'm Shoplifting".
Just kidding.

You're reading Why does security follow me at Home Depot like I'm gonna steal something? Isn't there something I can do about it, it happens all the time......
Comments
I followed them once, then there were more. I believe the manager was one of them, and even if I he wasn't what could he possibly do? It's like being stalked and harrassed.....very frustrating.

If the problem persists, I really would shop elsewhere. Why put yourself through this? The other thought that came to mind is asking for the manager's supervisor, or contacting Home Depot's corporate offices. If you know of others who've experienced this, you may be able to take legal action.

actually this happens to me even at grocery stores.....

If I say something about it, then I look automaticly like the "paranoid" bad guy.....
by Junk Yard Dog on March 7th, 2007
Pardon if I'm getting too personal, but is it an age or racial issue? That's a tough one because of all the bigotry out there.

Alot of people who stand up for their rights look like the bad guy. Don't let that stop you!

I'm already on a roll.....
by Junk Yard Dog on March 7th, 2007
Really though. I know you might not want to take up the fight, but it is a persistant problem that should be addressed.
by gtravels loves her life penguin on March 7th, 2007
It's harassment and could be a violation of your civil rights.

A lawyer may take your case on a contingency basis, taking money only if you win. The consultation is usually free.

Any possibility of involving the press?
by gtravels loves her life penguin on March 7th, 2007
The only way to prove it is in their control. I would be blacklisted even more if I called the press up to this little country town.....
by Junk Yard Dog on March 7th, 2007
Sounds like what you're saying is that right now you have no options. Don't know your age, but if you can't leave there right now, stick it out, leave when you can, and try to make a change when you get out in the world so others don't have to suffer the same thing.

Go to Lowes. Read up on how HD treats its vendors. HD sucks.
by Someguy on March 7th, 2007
Gtravels, you are quite the optimist...point well taken.
Someguy, I believe it, you nearly have to be an active member in the KKK to be hired at this one, can imagine the conflicts with vendors and even minorety customers....
