My 1996 Honda Civic LX overheats when I am driving slow or idling. The moment I turn on the heater, the temperature drops down again. Is this a problem with the thermostat or is the water pump going bad?

overheating is a hard problem to pin point. worst case scenario its your head gasket. it could also just be your thermostat, or your radiator. replace the thermostat (theyre cheap) and have your radiator pressure tested for any leaks and go from there.

This sound like a classic head gasket. There is updated gasket for this application see your local Honda for the updated gasket.
