I don't know whether it will work in your case but it should do. The files are stored on your mp3 player as mp3 files (or possibly WMA files). Because you haven't tld real player to rename them at all, it stores them by a default name, i.e. track X from CD Y. So, alphabetically, you get something like the following:
track 1 CD 1
track 1 CD 2
track 1 CD 3
track 2 CD 1
etc etc. Because 2 comes after 1, this is the order it is stored in.
To get around this, when you save the files you need to change the name they are saved under.
1) Open Real Player, and you should see a menu bar across the top, one of which will say Tools.
2)Click on Tools, go down the menu that opens and click on Preferences at the bottom.
3) This opens a new box. On the left is a number of categories and on the right is the options associated with each category. Find the My Library category in the left part. It should have a plus or a minus sign next to it. The plus sign indicates there are hidden subcategories in the category, a minus sign indicates you are already showing these subcategories. If it is a plus sign, click on the plus to open the subcategories.
4) Click on the subcategory Advanced My Library. The right panel should change to display the options for this subcategory. It probably has a tick in the box "When downloading or saving tracks from CD.....". However, at the moment it automatically names them in a way that you don't want. So we'll change that.
5) Click the button that says Change Files Names. In the new box that opens, if I were you I would choose the first drop down box to be Album, so that the files will be arranged by album first. In the second drop down box, choose Track Number. The other two can be left blank if you want. Then choose OK to close all the boxes.
So now, rather than arranging the files by Track number, then by CD, it will arrange them by CD and then track number. So your mp3 player should arrange them as so.
Great. Except the ones already on the mp3 player will still be in the wrong order. So, two choices:
You can either delete the files currently on your mp3 player and transfer them across again to your player, and it will automatically arrange them the new way. Any new CDs you transfer will also be arranged correctly.
Or you can rearrange the files already on the mp3 player, by renaming them. This saves you having to delete and re-transfer them, but you will have to rename them all and make sure you rename them corectly.
Either way, you have to connect your mp3 player and open the folder where the files are stored. When you connect it up, it may automatically open the folder for you, or give you the option of viewing the folder. If not, open My Computer and look for the mp3 player there, it may be called LOGIK or something similar, or it may have a strange name and you can't identify it. If you can't identify it, unplug it, then re-plug it back in. It will be the one that disappears and then reappears.
When you have located it, open it up, find the files that are still in the wrong order and either delete them (if you want to re-transfer everything) or rename them to something more recognisable by rightlicking on each one and choosing rename, then typing in a more suitable name such as Harry Potter Chamber of Secrets chapter 1. Make sure that the name you choose for each book is exactly the same for all the relevant tracks or the alphabetical order will be screwed up again.

Thanks very much, it appears to have worked. What is really odd is that I'd already managed to get everything onto her MP3 player but one story was in reverse so I deleted everything to put some new stuff on for her, using real player again and without changing anything and it all got mixed up. Such is life. thanks again
