I'm sure you wouldn't want to be traveling on the same plane as I, if I were allowed to bring my dive tanks, fully charged (they're not even allowed empty, which also makes sense). Having a 3200 PSI potential bomb in the cargo bay just wouldn't be a good idea.

Interesting question. You are right there are a lot of restrictions.

Some are necessary to prevent interference with the sensitive instruments the pilot depends on to safely operate the aircraft.

Others are for the health of ALL occupants of the plane such as no smoking on planes. There is no way smoking can be done in a commercial aircraft and not have it affect every other occupant. Smoking and non smoking sections does not safeguard non-smokers from the affects of cigarette smoke.

Others are for all passenger/staff safety. Especially in light of terrorist activity involving aircraft.

It is true that one does pay for the service provided, but so has every other passenger onboard.

Restrictions are in place to safeguard the safety and health of ALL passengers and staff.

To make it more difficult for anyone to take control of the plane or to blow it up. It is an attempt to keep another tragedy like 9/11 from happening.

Because people might bring dangerous material on the flight that endangers the lives of other passengers (i.e. Lighters, Guns...)

Also, this should be enforced due to the risk of terrorism and hijacking in recent years.

One's discomfort at the safety of the masses is always prioritized.
