The sine function has a range of [-1,1]. Putting a negative in front of it makes it look like a reflection of itself across the x-axis. The sin curve begins at (0,0) and goes up to (pi/2,1). The negative version still begins at the origin, but goes down to (pi/2,-1). The range is still (-1,1).
