When villains say, "I want his head on a plate!", do they really mean it?

    Salome did .
    Decapitation was and still is a method of death penalty that was used a lot in the past. The head was then usually put on a spike as a warning to other criminals or just the general population.

    They probably don't expect this to really happen, just for the person to get killed.

    However, the Apostle Paul was reported to have been beheaded by Nero (Roman Emperor at the time). He asked for Paul's head on a plate:
    The only thing we have to go on is Christian tradition, which has Paul being behead in Rome, around the mid 60s A.D., during the reign of Nero. Most Bible dictionaries and some commentaries can give us details on the traditions surrounding Paul's death.
