Why has poetry lost much of its popularity as a mainstream art form?

Poetry requires meter and comprehension, along with vocabulary. Since the arrival of rap, true appreciation of meter has gone out the window. And English skills are declining at a rapid rate.

People feel scholarly if they can read their native language. Forget spelling, punctuation & grammar. The nuances of poetry are so far out of reach of the average high school students, it's laughable (or cry-able). People keep trying to tell me that rap is poetry or that music lyrics are (well, a few are, but very few). It's amazing that poetry gets published at all.

I don't think it has. Of course some poetry is a very personal thing to the poet and he may be suggesting something completely different than you the reader. I like to read a poem, if I think it's good, I will read it again, looking for a truer meaning than I first percieved. It can be quite startling sometimes to find a completely different meaning than the first one you put on it.
