    Servers are used to provide things to other systems, either a printer, files, web pages, network configuration details, etc. They are different from normal PC's in that they generally run UNIX, Linux, or special server versions of Mac OS X or Windows (2003 or 2008 these days). Hardware-wise they are designed for redundancy and to stay up and running thousands of times longer than a normal PC.

    In a short answer, they are computers that store large amounts of information and distribute it to other computers that are called clients.
    For example, whilst you and I are in AB, we are the clients and the AB computer is the server.
