Where does the phrase "raised to the ground" come from?

    It is properly spelt "razed to the ground". Raze is the word from which Razor comes - it means to cut of smooth to the surface, as a razor cuts of hair. So something razed to the ground has been so demolished that nothing sticks up above ground level.
