Never done a total fake, no. I've put plenty of fluff in them, at times. Every employer is different. Some chase down every reference, yet I've seen companies that don't even pull your license abstract even though driving is part of the job. it all depends on the company.
does anybody have any experience with one of those professional resume / CV writing services? and if so what's a good one?

When applying for jobs, are you supposed to send your Resume AND the (excellent) character reference from your former employer??
