Most people become obsessed with pounds but since muscle weighs more than fat you do not always lose weight when on a fitness and exercise regime, you just become firmer and look slimmer.

Water weight most likely. Besides which exercise promotes muscle mass gain as well. So in some instance a gain of weight is more along the lines of muscle mass not fat.

0.2 pounds can also mean she needs a bowl movement. Seriously. Trainers for Body Builders insist on a weigh in at the exact same time each day for the weigh in (which actually should be once a week not once a day). Mind this is established once they know the BM schedule of the trainee - some folk go once a day others go every other or every 3 days depends on the person.

Weight or scales is not a good measure of the real issue which is body fat, or percentage of body fat. That requires specialized measurements that CAN NOT be done at home. Seriously if she is seeking to lose fat (a difference than weight per-se) she needs to see either her doctor or a gym trainer (most gyms now do body fat measurements).

nor are the BMI charts. Take Arnold Schwarzenegger during his BB career. Although 6' some odd inches he weighed 250 + pounds. By the BMI chart he would be obese - however for him that weight was muscle mass.

Lastly, when we cut down on our food intake the body reads it as FAMINE. Starvation takes place during a famine - our species has developed wonderful ways to deal with famine situations, one is to store as much food in the way of fat. Fat is a secondary fuel source, although food is best, the body can sustain itself for a lengthy period of time on its fat. When starvation/famine sets in the body stores as much energy (fat) as possible to off set more famines in future. Thus those who go on low calorie (starvation) diets tend to pack on the pounds and some times end up heavier than when they started as soon as they stop the diet.

Women tend to more fat than men - this is natural. Further women have their monthly cycle which does have water retention and a few other things which make an impressive mark on the weigh in.

I would strongly urge a visit with doctor to insure that the diet plan she has is a good one. Not too many calories and not too few. More exercise and cutting of added fats and sugars will, over months of time, lead to a lot of fat loss. However added exercise will also lead to muscle mass gain which off sets the weight issue.

When did she begin trying to lose weight? If it's just been a day or two, she won't see results right away. Tell her to keep up what she's doing and in a week or two she should have lost 1-5 pounds. And maybe increase the amount she exercises. 30 minutes is enough to maintain her weight, tell her to try to exercise longer for at least 45 minutes, 5 times a week and to build up a sweat.

    G'day Challenger1,

    Thank you for your question.

The most important thing is for her to stick with it as she will be healthier even if she hasn't lost weight as yet. She might want to speak with a dietician to look over her diet in detail to see what the problem is. The other issue is sleep as not getting enough sleep is a factor in weight gain as there is a link between hours of sleep and weight gain.

    Regards

Make shure she eats breakfast w/in an hour of waking up and eats every 4 hours to keep her matabolism up. Most important be encouraging and dont let her give up! even if she doesnt lose alot of weight fitness is good for her body and should b a lifestyle change.

    Hi all,

Since last time I posted the question, the situation with my wife'weight/fat loss has got worse. For some reasons, she continues what she does and been able to maintain her weight around 114 to 116 lbs.

Since last week, she has been on the tradmill twice (30 mins each), and on 18 Mar 07 morning, she is still 115 lbs. But this morning (20 Mar 2007), she is 119.8 lbs.

I can't explanin this weird phenomenon where cutting down of the regular junk food and some exercise will put more weights. I don;t believe it was due to the build up of muscle because just a few times on the treadmill without any weight training could not possibly build a few pounds of muscle.

Note : on 18 Mar 07 she has been taking some antibiotics for throat infection. Would the antibiotics be causing this ?

It is normal tell her not to weigh but once a month and she will be suprised. If she weighs to often it will discourage her.

    Hi Puppylover,

Thanks for your feedback. But could you explain in a bit more details why it is normal to gain a few pounds in 2 days ? My wife was telling me this morning that she can actually feel the weight gain and she could not fit into her pants.

Muscle weighs more than fat... this may be a contributing factor...

Thanks all of you for your feedback. My wife has started about 2 weeks. She actually wants to lose fat so that she can fit into her jeans (when she was 113 lbs). She is 116/117 lbs now and can;t fit into all her jeans, some skirts,....
