I KNOW my dogs know better because they sneak home all guilty like. LOL.
I think that the temptation of the trash barrels in the alley or a cool dip in the river is too tempting though. They always try again.
Some breeds of dogs are more likely to run away then others. Husky type dogs and hound type dogs are ones who have an inbred need to roam. Mostly though, dogs escape their yards and run off because their humans don't provide them with the adequate mental and physical stimulation, that they require and companionship and the dogs are board stiff, so they escape. If you have a dog that is doing this, you need to provide it with more exercise, away from your yard and you need to provide it with training and with companionship. Dogs are pack animals and don't enjoy being left alone for long periods. If you are loyal and faithful to you dog and provide it these things, it will be loyal and faithful to you, in return.
I think it's more like they just want to have fun. And a bit of freedom.
i don't think they want to leave unless they are abused. dogs like to roam and i think they get so far away they can't find their way back, or someone pics them up i have three dogs and i always make sure they have tags so hopefully if they do get out of the fence someone will call the vets number on the tags. my dogs have gotten out by accident but luckily the found their way back home.
i think they want freedom.
My dog hates me so I know its because he wants to run away from me
The ancestors of our dogs did not just stay on in a fenced in yard. Wolves sometimes travel 12 miles a day while looking for food. They learn there way home by following older pack members while they are still puppies. Keeping a dog penned up in the yard is not natural for them. Walking your dog regularly will help them burn off the urge to roam by burning off some energy, plus if the dog does get loose, it will have a better chance of finding it's way home.
I think dogs get out get on a scent or frolic with their mates and sometimes just cannot find their way back. I am not sure that you can ask whether they know better or not. After all we aren't sure just what dogs can know.
I am sure they know much we would be luck to know.
Could be either way.But if they are not treated bad, they probably just want to run around to explore, but get lost.
Most don't know any better.
They just like to explore. Sometimes they get lost or are otherwise unable to return.
