Timers may put it to sleep or shut it down, but they won't freeze your system.
However, it can take a while to "wake up" when you disturb it, so there may be a couple of minutes where the system won't respond at all because it's too busy coming back up to notice that you are moving the mouse so it may *appear* frozen for a bit.
