  • A jib is fastened to the forestay all along its length, whereas a spinnaker is fastened only at the peak and a sheet at each corner (both jib sheets go to the same corner). This means that a spinnaker can only be used when the direction of sailing is broadly downwind, whereas a jib can be used all the way to close hauled.
  • A jib is a small sail attached along its length to a cable at the front of the boat. A genoa is the same big bigger. A spinnaker is only attached at the corners, is much bigger than either, and can only be used with the wind behind.
