I would read it to the residents of a convalescent home first.
If everyone falls asleep, I would assume that the manuscript needs to be re-edited before it is ready for publishing.
Let some people you know read it who are interested in the genre you wrote.
You pitch it to several publishers to see if they're interested. But FYI, most publishers are not interested in books that are already written. Rather they discuss ideas for books and help to shape them AS they are written.
Getting some feed back from a few people you trust to not steal it and TO BE HONEST about it is my method.
I have my ex husband reading one of mine now, for flow, interest and general content. He's not doing any editing for me, I have someone else for that part.
It isn't a book he would normally tend to read AND he isn't a big reader in the first place...not like I am with 2 or 3 books being read at any given time.
So far, so good. I do trust him to be honest. He says he is enjoying it. Likes the way it flows, is interested in finding out what will happen, and feels the language transports the reader to the period, without being difficult or annoying to read. (It takes place in the Middle Ages).
Now what I've read, heard is different from what Mary Mary says.
MY understanding is that you write the book, send your query letter to publishers who 1. publish that TYPE of book and 2. are accepting new submissions. Including a BRIEF over-view of the story.
If you are writing a series, as I am, they prefer that book One is finished, and book Two is nearly finished. If they are interested in book One, (and you mentioned that there is a book two coming along) then they ask for more information or several chapters..then go on (or not) from there.
Always keep in mind that they may love your idea, and STILL ask you to rewrite, delete, change things...While a novice writer might initially be upset to consider such as this....REMEMBER...if a Publisher asks you to do it...THEY BELIEVE YOUR BOOK WILL SELL...if you do as they suggest/ask you to do!!!
They don't want to waste their time and money, unless they believe the basic story is a good one! YOUR success is THEIR success...and they need and want to be successful selling your book!
You can also hook up with an Agent who will either read it, or hire/have a professional READER plow though it. Then your Agent will make suggestions for changes, or start hitting up Publishers for you. The Agent too...wants your book to be published and sell...that's how THEY make their money!!!
Never pay an Agent a Signing On Fee! Only pay commission when you get a Publishing Advance, or Royalties are paid to YOU.
Don't get discouraged...be willing to make changes when needed. Remember there are a LOT OF US out there. Be polite and professional. WE need the Publishers...THEY don't need us...there are lots of us!
