Ok I'm gonna ramble for a bit....
Is it possible? Yes. Probable? No. We are already aware of this dilemma and so will more than likely try to use precaution to avoid it happening. But say that we do not want to avoid it, or by chance we do not..well then one has to also consider that, like the movies where the robots raise up and kill their makers, we too might be "terminated"...but before we get to that point that AI becomes so good a machine could truly be sentient, I think we might first choose to become one with machines and in-so doing become immortal. Our essences, stored within machine forms. To me that would seem more like something the elite powerful would want. Instead of machines that can think, Thinking humans that are machine.
The future is a very big place. Lots can happen.
It's possible, but only if we first give it the means to do so. At present, our biggest supercomputers barely register on the scales of intelligence. A computer might beat a human at chess, but it still can't enjoy music or give an opinion on the political situation in Palestine, or even enjoy its victory. If we ever create computers with the brain ability to make such arbitrary choices and form their own aims AND also arm it with weapons etc., then yes they could.
Perhaps it's already happened. Check out this discussion:

I think that one day, yes, it is a possibility...but the probability of such an event is extremely low. Most of the time there are numerous fail-safe and redundancy programs running within any system, including A.I. systems that can allow the user or creator total shutdown control in the event of a malfunction...although i wouldnt be surprised one bit if we did make a self-aware robot and forgot to implement a fail-safe lol.
Yep, watch Battlestar Gallactica?
Quite possibly, but the odds are that we (as we envision ourselves) will be long gone from the big picture. Bear in mind we do not yet have a supportable definition of "intelligence." As stated above, the future is a very large place & we may very well not have even the tiniest corner of it. Even now, our place in the great grand scheme of things is quite small. Quit reading Philip K. Dick & read Loren Eiseley instead.
Only if we let it.
somebody's been watching i, robot.
watch Battlestar Galactica
Artificial intelligence will one day overthrow mankind. Its due to the advanced growth in the field of scientific technology. Day by day new techniques and new inventions are introduced.
Only if we give the ability to AI to reproduce/rebuild itself. In otherwords battlestar galactica
For artificial intelligence to take over the world, a computer would need to be able to think and learn. The best a computer can do with current technology, is make a decision based on the value of a variable, and keep a log of the result received when the chosen action was carried out.
Computers can't even come up with (truly) random numbers.
Sure, sure.....whatever you say.
It has the potential to, but it probably will not. Artificial intelligence lacks the ability to express opinion or utilize free will. Why would something that has extreme intelligence want to take over humanity if it has no personal ideals or notions of self-betterment?
I think it already has.
Yes - but only if we let it!
I doubt it. Artificial Intelligence is just giving a computer a list of options. Then you give it information concerning a problem, and the computer chooses one of those options. Really isn't room for taking overthrowing manking.
Plus they'd need to be able to think, which is much more complicated than the inefficient math computers usually do.
Now, if they could create a computer that could come up with true random numbers, that would be impressive.
Seeming a bit improbable.
