  • That sounds like rust to me. You might want to get a professional in to have a look at it, incase it's a small indication of a bigger problem.
  • It is mildew, a form of mould."Mildew breeds very quickly and voraciously if any water collects, or even if there are periods of high humidity. Mildew feeds off residual soap, which is almost always there, and water. I would bet that you are collecting small amounts of water under the shower door. The shower with the curtain will "dry out" much more quickly than water under the shower door. http://www.newton.dep.anl.gov/askasci/gen01/gen01164.htm Sodium hypochlorite, of which Clorox is a commerial name (although there are probably cheaper generic ones), is the classic "cure" for removing mildew stains from damp basement walls, and other damp areas.
  • Have you ran out of salt for your softner? It sounds like rust to me, You could try the cleaning product "the works" for tubs, If it is rust it will come off without scrubing,(scrubing will speed it up coming off.) You may have to spray it several times.
  • Well my steam cleaner eats straight through it with ease. To be honest, I thought it would be quite bad to have rust in the water supply. Where would it have come from?
  • I am asking the same question? I never had this problem before, until this rental property had to be repiped, they used dpvc-plastic pipes and placed those pipes in the attic. Right off the bat the water had strong gassy smell and was undrinkable. Had to buy brita filter for the kitchen. But i have also noticed that reddish residue in the showerhead etc. I mentioned it to my sister, she says that's FUNGUS. which has spread through the pipes, probably from a current leak somewhere in the line / stagnet water. And should be checked out by a professional asap.
